Boodle Hatfield's arts team have advised the Northbank Business Improvement District on the installation of The Voiceline, an immersive sound instrument art experience created by Nick Ryan and located at the Strand Aldwych with the permission of Westminster City Council.
2022 marks the centenary of the BBC, and the Strand was at the centre of this milestone, with the first ever scheduled radio broadcast released to the public on 14 November 1922 from a medium wave transmitter located on the fifth floor of Marconi House, the Strand. The Voiceline celebrates this rich history and the Strand’s involvement in heralding the beginning of the information age.
The Voiceline provides a unique sound experience, described as “a site-specific immersive sound installation and the largest public ‘sound instrument’ in the world. It conjures an evolving pathway of audio 170m long from east to west; an ever changing immersive journey along the Strand …inspired by remarkable yet untold histories of radio innovation that began here and changed the world…”. The Northbank BID have marked the opening, with project partners and local stakeholders, including the BBC, Somerset House Trust and Kings College.
Following its unveiling on the 5th December, the Voiceline will remain in situ at the Strand for 3 months until March 2023, with a daily schedule of audio works from 8am to 8pm. The installation is freely available to the public, and a map and further details can be found on the Voiceline website.
The Boodle Hatfield team included expertise from Partner and Head of the Arts and Litigation teams, Simon Fitzpatrick and was led by Corporate Associate, Fred Clark, with assistance from Corporate Associate, Ruby Dyce.
